Lifestyle
For long-time Wake and Johnston county residents, the area known as McGee’s Crossroads was once a community of farmers with field after field of tobacco, corn and cows. Today, this neck of the woods is growing by leaps and bounds. The area is just off Interstate 40 and can be accessed by taking exit 319 and heading towards Raleigh at exit 312. Neighborhoods are expanding with lots of new construction, ranging from smaller, starter homes to large estates. Lots vary from modest sizes to an acre or more. If you like the idea of a quiet, rural living with amenities at your fingertips, McGee’s Crossroads may be the perfect place to call home.
Stephenson’s Barbecue, on Highway 50, just off 210, is a must stop for the best in pit-cooked barbecue. The fried chicken tastes just like grandma’s and so does the banana pudding. Barbecued chicken, hush puppies and Brunswick stew round out a great country meal that’s just fittin’. Lane’s Seafood and Steak House is also back open now on the Gregory Vineyards site. A great place to get seafood without driving to the coast.
McGee’s Crossroads has an athletic association, making it easy to get the children involved in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and cheerleading. They compete against the other athletic associations found throughout Johnston and southern Wake County. Why not join in the fun too and volunteer to coach?
McGee’s Crossroads has shopping options, from grocery stores and pharmacies to fast food joints, doctor’s offices and popular retail chains. The shopping centers off I-40 at exit 312 continue to expand with more shopping, dining offerings and commercial offices.
Life in the McGee’s Crossroads area is still firmly rooted in the region’s farming days. There are farmer’s stands with fresh vegetables and fruit throughout the spring, summer and fall season. Nurseries nearby offer trees, bushes and flowers for your lawn. And don’t forget to try and find the biggest pumpkin in the field, just right for carving!
